Maria’s journey began in 1946 in the small farming town of Allmendingen, Germany; a place where hard work and strength of her Christian faith would be the foundation of her character. Maria would not live the life that many of her relatives would live in Germany, but rather one of adventure and unexpected opportunities.
Maria’s abrupt end to the rural life began when she met her husband to be, Bill Murphy. This American soldier would take Maria away from Allmendingen toward a life that one would not expect. After marrying Bill at the tender age of 19, Maria would become a mother to her first born Charles, within a year. She was then whisked off to the US and would eventually become a US citizen. Within another year, her second child Robert would be born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At this point Maria was quickly becoming a self-sufficient army wife; the unheralded backbone to the US military.
Army life as dependent in the cold war era would mean lifting the family every four years or so and moving to another assignment between Europe and the US. While on their second move back to Germany God blessed them with a third son, Patrick.
As if life of raising three very busy boys and pulling the family up every four years wasn’t enough, Maria would begin going to college at night which would eventually lead to a bachelor\'s of science from the University of Maryland University College in 1981 with the highest honor of summa cum laude.
Maria’s end to the Army life would come with the retirement of Bill in 1985 at Ft. Dix, NJ. By then Maria was well into a nursing career and had become an operating room nurse assisting in open heart surgery at Deborah Heart and Lung Hospital in Browns Mills, NJ.
By 1989 Maria once again had the need for adventure and elected to join a flying club at McGuire Air Force Base nearby. Maria would not only get her pilot\'s license, but she would attain a commercial twin engine rating. This passion for flying would eventually lead her back to school where she earned her Master of Aeronautical Science from Emory Riddle University in 1992.
Shortly after she graduated, Bill passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack. It would be several years later when a mutual friend arranged a blind date with James Andary, an engineer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD. James being a devout Catholic and widower himself, made for wonderful friendship and eventually a strong love that was unified through marriage in 2001 at the chapel in Mr. Andary’s high school, Gonzaga High School, in Washington, DC.
After moving down from NJ to join her new husband in Montgomery Village, MD Maria, took a few years off. But the love of flying soon motivated her to apply to become a flight attendant. She was accepted by US Airways and graduated from their flight attendant school in Pittsburgh, PA. After a few years of domestic flying Maria was able to spend her summers as a German translator on transatlantic flights out of Philadelphia to Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich.
Maria’s final chapter of her life began with a diagnosis of breast cancer in 2005. She began treatments and after six months was cleared to fly again which she did until an unexpected recurrence in 2012 led to a courageous battle for the last 2 years.
